Feather & Fan Blanket
Hello, dear reader! Welcome to our charming blog, Handmade Learning Here. Today, we’re excited to introduce you to a delightful pattern: the Feather & Fan Blanket.
Among the many patterns that capture the essence of tradition and innovation, the Feather & Fan Blanket stands out as a true gem. Known for its elegant waves and sophisticated textures, this pattern is a popular choice for creating cozy, stylish blankets. In this article, we’ll explore the charm of the Feather & Fan Blanket and what makes it so special.
The Feather & Fan Blanket is a celebration of classic crochet beauty. The pattern features delicate waves that resemble feathers or leaves, creating a visually stunning effect. Its simplicity allows it to be adapted for a variety of projects, from blankets to shawls and pillows.
One of the main attractions of the Feather & Fan Blanket is its versatility. Instructions
This pattern has a 19-stitch repeat. If you want to make a larger blanket, just add more sets of 19 stitches when you start. If you want to make something smaller, like a wrap, you can start with fewer sets of 19 stitches. I’ve included a table with some examples to help you out.
I suggest making a small practice piece (called a swatch) first. This will help you get comfortable with the stitch. After you finish the swatch, wash and block it to get a good sense of your gauge, which will help you figure out the final size of your project. Below is the stitch chart for the swatch.
To make the swatch: chain 57 stitches, plus 3 more chains to start the first stitch.
Chain 209: If you’re making something larger or smaller, you can adjust the number of chains according to the pattern’s table.
Color Pattern: You’ll be using different colors for each stripe. Follow this order:
CC1 (Contrast Color 1)
CC2 (Contrast Color 2)
MC (Main Color)
CC3 (Contrast Color 3)
CC4 (Contrast Color 4)
MC (Main Color)
CC5 (Contrast Color 5)
CC1 (Contrast Color 1)
MC (Main Color)
Repeat this pattern as needed.
Row 1:
Start by making 3 additional chains (these will count as your first double crochet).
Work into the back ridge of the chain:
Make 2 double crochets (dc) in the 4th chain from your hook.
Make 3 double crochets in the next chain.
Skip 1 chain, make 1 double crochet in the next chain, and repeat 7 times.
Skip 1 chain, then make 3 double crochets in the next chain. Repeat this step 4 times.
Repeat from * to * 10 times.
Skip 1 chain, make 1 double crochet in the next chain 7 times.
Skip 1 chain, make 3 double crochets in the next chain.
In the last chain, make 3 double crochets.
Changing Colors:
To change colors in the final stitch:
Yarn over (wrap the yarn around your hook).
Insert the hook into the stitch, pull up a loop.
Yarn over and draw through the first 2 loops on your hook.
Last Step for Changing Yarn Color:
Switch Colors: To change to your new yarn color for the final double crochet stitch, yarn over with the new color, then pull it through the last 2 loops on your hook.
Trim Old Yarn: Cut the old yarn, leaving a small tail that you can sew in later.
Row 2:
Start: Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet).
Make 2 double crochets into the same stitch. To save time later, you can catch the tails of both the old and new yarns here.
Make 3 double crochets into the next stitch.
*Skip 1 stitch, then make 1 double crochet into the next stitch – repeat this step 7 times.
Skip 1 stitch, then make 3 double crochets into the next stitch. Repeat this step 4 times.*
Repeat from * to * a total of 10 times.
Skip 1 stitch, then make 1 double crochet into the next stitch 7 times.
Skip 1 stitch, then make 3 double crochets into the next stitch.
Make 3 double crochets into the 3rd chain of the starting chain-3.
Repeat: Repeat Row 2 a total of 63 more times, making 65 rows in total, or as many rows as needed.
Borders:
Add Border: Using your main color yarn, make a single crochet border along the top and bottom edges of your blanket:
Hold the tail end of your yarn at the back of your work.
Insert your hook into the first stitch and pull up a loop.
Chain 1, then make a single crochet in the same stitch.
Make 1 single crochet in each stitch across the edge.
Fasten off and sew in the ends.
Finish Up: Wash your blanket or wrap in lukewarm water with mild detergent, and let it dry flat if possible.
