Ribbon Christmas Tree
Hello, friends! There’s something truly magical about crocheting for the holidays — the soft yarn in your hands, the sparkle of the Christmas lights, and the joy of creating something precious with love. Today I’m sharing a sweet and beginner-friendly project that will bring a warm handmade touch to your festive decorations: the Crochet Ribbon Christmas Tree.
This delightful little ornament combines a simple crochet strip with a pretty ribbon woven throughout, forming a cute tree shape that’s perfect for hanging, gifting, or decorating your holiday home. And the best part? It works up quickly and uses just a small amount of yarn, making it a wonderful project for last-minute crafting or using up scraps.

A Soft and Simple Tree That Anyone Can Make
This pattern is designed with beginners in mind, gentle increases, easy stitches, and a relaxed rhythm that makes the work truly enjoyable. The tree is formed by crocheting a long strip that gradually becomes narrower as you move upward. Once the strip is done, a thin ribbon is woven through the stitches in a zigzag pattern, giving the piece its adorable stacked-tree look.
If you’ve ever worried that holiday crochet is too complicated, oh honey, this little tree will change your mind. The stitches are straightforward, the shaping happens naturally, and the final result looks like something you’d find in a boutique holiday market. It’s sweet, simple, and so satisfying to make.
If you’re looking for a quick, adorable Christmas project that adds a cozy handmade charm to your holiday décor, this Ribbon Christmas Tree is just perfect for you. It works up fast, uses only a small amount of yarn, and looks beautiful whether you hang it on your tree, use it as a gift topper, or decorate a garland. Let’s make something cute together!

How the Tree Is Made
We crochet a long strip that gently increases in width. After that, we weave the ribbon back and forth through the stitches, folding the strip into a tree shape.
It’s simple, relaxing, and sooo cute!
Pattern Instructions
Start the Base Strip
We’ll begin at the bottom of the tree and work our way upward.
Row 1:
Ch 36.
Starting in the second ch from the hook:
1 sc in each ch across. (35 sc)
Turn.
- Increase the Shape
We’ll slowly make the strip narrower as we work upward, so the tree gets that pretty tapered look.
Row 2:
Ch 1, sc in next 33 sts, skip the last 2 sts. (33 sc)
Turn.
Row 3:
Ch 1, sc in each st across. (33 sc)
Turn.
Row 4:
Ch 1, sc in next 31 sts, skip last 2 sts. (31 sc)
Turn.
Continue working like this:
- One row straight
- Next row decreases by skipping the last 2 stitches
Repeat until you have about 6–7 steps, or until the strip looks like a long trapezoid.
Your strip should look like a long ribbon that gradually gets smaller toward the end.
- Narrow the Top
When you reach the top:
Last rows:
Ch 1, sc in each st, decreasing 2 stitches every other row, until only 5 stitches remain.
When you have 5 stitches left:
Work 1 more row of sc across.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Weaving the Ribbon
Now the fun part — shaping your little tree!
Thread your ribbon into a yarn needle.
Starting at the bottom, weave the ribbon in and out of the stitches in a zigzag pattern:
- First row: weave across the whole width
- Next row: weave slightly shorter
- Next: a bit shorter again
Each time you weave, pull the ribbon slightly so that the crocheted strip folds inward.
Little by little, the shape becomes a tree!
Optional:
Glue or sew a bead, mini bow, or star to the top of the tree.
Finishing Touches
- Add a loop of ribbon or yarn to hang it
- Attach it to a wreath
- Tie it to a Christmas gift
- Add beads like ornaments
- Brush the edges with glitter glue for a magical shine
And there you go, sweetie!

Ideas to Personalize Your Ribbon Tree
One of my favorite things about this ornament is how easy it is to make each one unique. Here are a few ideas you might enjoy:
Play with ribbons
Satin, velvet, gingham, metallic, each ribbon gives the tree a completely different personality. Soft satin feels elegant, while rustic twill makes the tree charming and homey.
Add tiny decorations
Sew on beads like little ornaments, add a star button on top, or brush the edges with glitter glue for a magical shimmer.
Try different yarn textures
Acrylic yarn gives good structure, but using a fluffy yarn or a metallic thread can make your tree sparkle in the light.
Make a full set
Create a collection in different sizes and colors — they look darling displayed together on a mantel or as gift charms.
