Crochet Granny Squares

Crochet Square Motif

Hello, dear reader! I hope you are having a lovely day and feeling well. Today, we want to bring you a unique and beautiful pattern that will allow you to create countless crochet projects with an elegant design and visual appeal. We’re talking about the Crochet Motif Square pattern.

The piece is mainly made with double crochet stitches (dc), and clusters of three double crochet stitches (three double crochet stitches together) are used in the corners. A cluster is made by leaving the last loop of each stitch on the hook and then pulling through all three loops at once.

The usefulness of the crochet square goes beyond aesthetics; it is ideal for using up leftover yarn and experimenting with color and stitch combinations. Additionally, because they are small and quick to make, crochet squares are perfect for beginners looking to improve their skills. They are also easy to join, enabling the construction of larger projects like blankets, cushions, or even garments, with the advantage of being able to create in parts, making the work easier to transport and handle.

R1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc2tog in the ring (together with the first 3 chains, this makes a cluster), ch 5, dc3tog, ch 2, dc3tog, rep 2 times, ch 5, dc3tog, ch 2, sl st in the third ch of the beginning.

R2: Change color by joining the new yarn in any of the spaces created by the ch-5 in each corner. In the same corner, ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc2tog in the ring (together with the first 3 chains, this makes a cluster), ch 2, dc3tog. Continue with ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-2 space of the previous round, in the next corner, dc3tog, ch 2, dc3tog, rep 2 times, ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-2 space, ch 2, sl st in the third ch of the beginning of the round.

R3: Sl st to the ch-2 space in the corner. Start the round as in the previous ones, with ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc2tog in the ring (together with the first 3 chains, this makes a cluster), ch 2, dc3tog, all in the same corner. Continue with ch 2, 2 dc in the next ch-2 space, 1 dc in each of the next dc, 2 dc in the ch-2 space, ch 2, in the next corner, dc3tog, ch 2, dc3tog, rep 2 times, ch 2, 2 dc in the next ch-2 space, 1 dc in each of the next dc, 2 dc in the ch-2 space, sl st in the third ch of the beginning of the round.

R4: Change color by joining the new yarn in any of the ch-2 corners. Repeat the steps from the previous round, adding the necessary dc on the sides of the square (that is, 1 dc in each of the dc from the previous round).

R5: Change color by joining the new yarn in any of the ch-2 corners. Repeat the steps from the previous round, adding the necessary dc on the sides of the square, with the only variation being that in the corners, between the two dc3tog, make ch 3 instead of ch 2.

R6: Sl st to the ch-2 space in the corner. Repeat the steps from the previous round, adding the necessary dc on the sides of the square.

R7: Ch 1, sc in each stitch of the previous round, making 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc in each corner, and 2 sc in each ch-2 space.

And you’re done! Of course, the color changes don’t have to be done this way; you can even make the entire square in a single color…
