Recommended Materials
For a delicate yet sturdy Crochet Cross Bookmarker, I highly recommend using fine cotton thread or mercerized yarn—this gives your piece a refined, polished look. You’ll also need:
- 22 yards of Knit-Cro-Sheen thread (or any crochet thread of your choice).
- Crochet Hook: Size #7 steel hook (or any size that matches your thread choice).
- Gauge: After Rounds 1 and 2, your work should measure approximately 1¼ x 1¼ inches.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Starting at the Center
Chain (ch) 5 (or 6 or 7, depending on your yarn and hook size).
Slip stitch (sl st) into the first chain to form a ring.
Round 1
Chain 3 (this counts as the first double crochet – dc).
Work 2 double crochets (dc) into the ring.
Chain 1.
Repeat this sequence three more times: (3 dc into the ring, ch 1).
Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the starting chain 3 to join the round.
You should now have 4 chain-1 spaces (ch-1 sps).
Round 2
Chain 1, turn your work around.
Slip stitch into the first chain-1 space.
Make a shell: Chain 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc all in the same ch-1 space.
Chain 2.
Repeat in the next 3 chain-1 spaces: (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in ch-1 space), ch 2.
Slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the beginning ch 3 to join.
You should now have 4 shell stitches.
Chain 1, turn.
Work 1 single crochet (sc) in the first ch-2 space. You are now in position to begin making the first arm of the cross.
Making the Arms of the Cross
Each arm is made separately, one at a time.
Row 3 – Start the Arm
Chain 4 (this creates the first chain-4 space).
Work 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in the chain-1 space of the next shell (this is called “shell in shell”).
Row 4
Chain 1, turn.
Slip stitch in each of the next 2 dc, then slip stitch into the ch-1 space of the shell.
Chain 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc all in the same ch-1 space (another shell).
Work 1 treble crochet (tr) into the first dc of the previous row’s shell. This tr stitch serves as the second ch-4 space.
Row 5
Chain 4 (this makes the third ch-4 space), turn.
In the ch-1 space of the shell, work 2 dc, 1 tr, 2 dc.
Now, work along the side of the arm:
Chain 4, slip stitch into the top of the last dc from the previous row → repeat twice more.
Chain 4, single crochet (sc) into the next ch-2 space of Round 2.
This finishes the first arm. You are now ready to start the next arm!
Repeat Rows 3, 4, and 5 twice more to create the remaining two arms of the cross.
Making the Base of the Cross
Rows 6 – 11
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 three more times to extend the base.
Row 12 – Final Base Row
Chain 4 (this creates the 7th ch-4 space), turn.
In the ch-1 space of the shell, work 2 dc, 1 tr, 2 dc.
Work 7 chain-4 spaces along the opposite side of the base.
Slip stitch into the single crochet of the next ch-2 space of Round 2 to join.
At this point, if you want to add a contrasting border, follow the next section. Otherwise, you can finish off your cross here!
Adding a Border (Optional)
Round 13
For each chain-4 space:
Slip stitch into the next ch-4 space.
Chain 1, work 3 sc into the ch-4 space → Repeat 3 times.
Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 dc, and 3 sc into the next treble crochet.
Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 dc.
Work 4 sc in the next chain-4 space.
Continue this pattern around the entire cross until you return to the starting point.
Slip stitch to join, then fasten off.
Adding a Tassel (Optional)
Cut several strands of yarn or thread to your desired length.
Fold them in half.
Attach them to the bottom of the cross using a Lark’s Head Knot.
Your crochet cross is now complete!
You can use it as a bookmark, wall decoration, gift, or keepsake. If you used two colors, the border will make the details stand out even more.
