The Zig Zag Puff Stitch has that cozy touch that looks stunning in blankets, scarves, sweaters, and even pillows. It creates a delicate texture with those raised puff stitches and the gentle ripple effect of the zigzag.

A Few Tips for You:
Choose the right yarn: For a fluffier effect, go for soft, thicker yarns. If you want something more delicate, cotton works beautifully.
Play with colors: This stitch looks amazing in colorful stripes!
Take your time: The secret to crochet is to enjoy each stitch and every moment. No rush—just relax and have fun!
Oh, my loves, crochet is like a warm hug for your hands and heart. I hope you enjoyed this little chat about the Zig Zag Puff Stitch. Now, let’s get to the good part…
Gather Your Supplies
To make this cozy scarf, you’ll need:
1 Caron Cake (the “Key Lime” color is shown here) – use 2 cakes for a longer scarf.
6 mm crochet hook – perfect for this project!
Darning needle – for weaving in those loose ends.
Scissors – to trim your yarn when you’re done.
Size & Gauge
Gauge: 5 puff stitches x 6 rows = 4 inches (measured in the stitch pattern).
Final Size: Your scarf will be about 8.5 inches wide.
- Short Scarflette (1 Cake): Around 38.5 inches long.
- Full-Length Scarf (2 Cakes): Around 77 inches long.
Abbreviations
Here are some common crochet terms used in this pattern:
Ch – Chain
Dc – Double Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Puff – (I’ll explain this stitch in detail below!)
Puff Stitch (Step by Step):
Yarn over (YO) and insert your hook into the stitch where you want to make the puff stitch.
YO again and pull up a loop—now you have 2 loops on your hook.
Repeat this step four more times (YO, insert hook into the same stitch, YO, pull up a loop). Each time, you’ll add more loops to your hook.
When you’ve done this a total of five times, you should have 11 loops on your hook.
YO one last time and pull through all the loops.
Chain 1 to secure the stitch.
Important Note: The puff stitch can be made in different ways. This version creates a thick puff stitch with 11 loops. In other patterns, the number of loops may vary to make the stitch thinner or fluffier. I’ll always let you know how many loops to use in future patterns!
A Few Helpful Notes
- This scarf is great for so many occasions! It’s stylish, fun, and works up super fast.
Caron Cakes are super popular right now, and this is a great way to use up any extra ones you might have. - If you use one cake, you’ll get a cute short scarf (like in the pictures). If you want a longer, fuller scarf, go for two cakes.
The Zig Zag Puff Stitch makes a beautiful, textured design. It does use quite a bit of yarn, but the end result is totally worth it! - If you’re new to this stitch, don’t worry—I’ve got a detailed video tutorial to help you through it. Just follow along and you’ll have a gorgeous scarf in no time!
Zig Zag Puff Stitch – Written Instructions
Row 1:
Chain 21.
Make a double crochet (dc) in the 4th chain from your hook.
Now, look at the chain right behind that double crochet—this is where you’ll make a puff stitch.
Skip the next chain, then make a double crochet in the following chain.
Go back to the skipped chain and make a puff stitch in it.
Repeat this pattern until you reach the end of the row.
Make a half double crochet (hdc) in the very last chain.
Row 2:
Chain 2 and turn your work.
Skip the first stitch, then make a double crochet in the first puff stitch you see.
Now, go back and make a puff stitch in the little gap between the hdc and puff stitch from the last row.
Skip the next double crochet and the space between the puff stitches. Then, make a double crochet in the next puff stitch.
Go back and make a puff stitch in the little gap between the puff stitches behind the double crochet.
Repeat this pattern across the row.
Finish with a half double crochet in the turning chain.
Keep repeating Row 2 until you finish your first Caron Cake (this should give you about 62 rows, but don’t worry if yours is a little different—puff stitches can vary in height).
Want a longer scarf? Just start your second Caron Cake and keep going with Row 2 until your scarf is about 77 inches long or until you run out of yarn.
Finishing Up:
Once you’re happy with the length, fasten off and weave in your ends. And voilà! You’ve made a beautiful, cozy scarf!
