Crochet Instructions

Before you start, ensure you have two finished granny squares ready.

Joining the Squares

Begin by aligning the wrong sides of the two squares. Use a yarn needle and a long strand of yarn to stitch together three sides, leaving the fourth side open.

Chicken Crown

Place the square with the opening facing to the right. Starting at the upper-left corner, count 8 stitches to the right. Attach pink yarn there. Make the following stitches in the same stitch: chain (Ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc) 3 times, single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc) and treble crochet (tr) together, treble crochet (tr) and double crochet (dc) together, single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc) 3 times, single crochet (sc), and finish with a slip stitch (sl st). Fasten off (FO) and weave in the ends.

Chicken Beak

Attach yellow yarn to the stitch right after the crown. Make the following stitches in the same stitch: chain (Ch) and single crochet (sc), then double crochet (dc), chain 3 (ch3), double crochet (dc), and single crochet (sc). Fasten off (FO) and weave in the ends.

Finishing the Body

Attach 12mm plastic safety eyes near the corner where the crown and beak meet. Fill the chicken with fiberfill stuffing until it’s nice and plump.

Next, press the opening of the body flat so that the top corner lines up with the bottom corner, forming a triangle or pyramid shape. This will create the area where the tail will go. Use yarn and a yarn needle to sew across this edge to close it up. Fasten off (FO) and weave in the ends.

Chicken Tail

Attach pink yarn to a stitch next to the center of the bottom edge (the edge you just sewed shut). In the same stitch, make the following: chain 3 (Ch3), treble crochet (tr), chain 3 (Ch3), and slip stitch (sl st). Repeat this process two more times to make three tail feathers. Fasten off (FO) with a yarn tail and weave in the ends.
