Supplies Needed:

  • Yarn in three colors: nose, chin, and main color. Aran weight
  • 5mm Crochet hook.
  • Scissors and a yarn needle.

Steps:

1. Make the Nose

  • Use the “nose color” yarn and create a magic circle.
  • Chain 3 (CH3), then crochet 2 double crochets (DC) into the magic circle.

2. Start the Face

  • Cut the nose yarn and attach the “chin color” yarn.
  • Chain 2 (CH2) for the corner space.

3. Form the Granny Square

  • Work 3 DC, CH2 into the circle three times to form a square.
  • Slip stitch (SS) to join the round and close the square.

4. Highlight the Nose

  • Slip stitch into the back loop of the nose corner, then continue slip stitching into all nose-colored loops (3 more times).
  • Don’t cut the yarn yet!

5. Tidy Up

  • Weave in the loose ends so far. (You’ll have more to do later!)
  • Optionally, use the chin color ends to wrap around and define a little mouth.

6. Build the Square

  • Slip stitch into the corner space, then:
    • CH2 to match DC height.
    • Work 3 DC into the corner space.
    • CH2, then 3 DC into the next corner space.
  • Repeat this in all corners.

7. Add More Rounds

  • Chain 3, turn the project, and add clusters of 3DC into each side space, and 3DC, CH2, 3DC into corner spaces.

8. Attach the Main Color

  • Join the main color to the lower right corner and CH3.
  • Continue working as before:
    • Add 3DC clusters into side spaces.
    • Add 3DC, CH2, 3DC into corner spaces.
    • Slip stitch across clusters when needed.

9. Finish the Shape

  • After completing the granny square, cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Add Features

Embroider the Eyes:

  • Use a needle and yarn to add eyes on the face. Wrap yarn around a DC cluster to form round eyes, or make small stitches for sleeping eyes.

Make the Ears:

  1. Attach yarn to the top corner of the square.
  2. Chain 2, then make a puff stitch (3 unfinished DC finished together).
  3. Repeat in the next space to shape the ear.
  4. Flip the work and add another puff stitch for height.
  5. Cut yarn, pull tight, and weave the ends neatly into the ear.
