CAT MOTIF
Inspired Pattern to Help You Recreate This Beautiful Piece
Hello, my friend, welcome to our lovely blog Handmade Learning Here. Today I have something new for you… If you’ve fallen in love with this delicate and charming Cat-Motif Lace Scarf, you’re not alone! This stunning accessory, with its soft gradient colors and whimsical little cat faces, has been making waves among crochet lovers. The original circulating images include only a visual chart, so to make things easier for crafters who want to recreate the look, I designed and wrote a fully interpreted pattern inspired by that diagram.
The scarf is built from multiple lightweight lace motifs shaped like tiny cat heads — each one joined together to create a soft, flowing fabric. While the original source offers only the chart, this written pattern helps beginners and visual learners understand each round step-by-step, making the project more accessible and enjoyable for crocheters of all levels.
Using just basic stitches like chains, single crochets, double crochets, and trebles, each motif works up surprisingly quickly. Once you learn the rhythm of the pattern, you’ll be able to make and join these little cats almost effortlessly. Repeating the motifs in rows gives the scarf its delicate drape and iconic look, perfect for wearing year-round or gifting to a cat lover.
This interpretation aims to honor the inspiration of the original chart while providing a clearer pathway for crocheters who need written guidance. Whether you’re making your first lace scarf or adding something unique to your handmade wardrobe, this cat-motif pattern is a joyful and rewarding project to stitch.

Stitches Used: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, treble crochet.
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- dc = double crochet
- tr = treble crochet
- ( ) = repeat inside parentheses
Round 1 — Center Circle
– Make a magic ring.
– Inside the ring work:
ch 3 (counts as 1 dc) + 11 dc.
You should have 12 dc total.
Join with sl st to the top of the ch 3.
Round 2 — Expanding the Circle
– ch 3
– 1 dc in the same stitch
– Work 2 dc in each stitch around
You will have 24 dc.
Join with sl st.
Round 3 — Chain Spaces
Repeat all around:
(1 dc in next stitch, ch 1)
This creates dc separated by ch-1 spaces.
Join with sl st.
Round 4 — The Petals / Points
The chart shows 4 large “petal” clusters made with treble crochet.
In one ch-1 space, work:
(1 tr, ch 1) four times, then 1 tr
→ A total of 4 tr with ch-1 between them.
In the next ch-1 space:
1 sc
Repeat:
Petal → sc → Petal → sc → Petal → sc → Petal → sc
Join with sl st.
Round 5 — The Outer Diamond
This is the big diamond made only of chains.
Each side of the diamond shows:
- ch 7
- sc in the top of the petal
- ch 8 for the corner
- sc in the next petal
So each side is:
sc on petal → ch 7 → sc → ch 8 (corner) → sc on next petal
Repeat around to form the full diamond.
Join with sl st.
CAT MOTIF CROCHET SCARF
Easy • Lightweight • Join-as-you-go
This pattern uses the motif we already decoded from your diagram, but arranged and connected like the lace cat scarf in the reference photo.
I’ll first give you the cat motif, then the joining method, then the full scarf instructions.
CAT MOTIF PATTERN
(Based on your diagram, shaped into the cat head like the photo)
CAT MOTIF — ROUND-BY-ROUND
Round 1 — Center
Make a magic ring.
Inside the ring:
ch 3 (counts as dc) + 11 dc = 12 dc total.
Join with sl st.
Round 2 — Increase Round
ch 3, dc in same st.
2 dc in each stitch around.
(24 dc total)
Join.
Round 3 — Spaced Round
Repeat all around:
(1 dc in next st, ch 1)
Join.
Round 4 — Forming the Cat Ears & Points
You will create 4 petals/points, but the top two are shaped like ears.
Repeat this sequence around:
📌 Petal/Ear (worked in 1 ch-space)
(1 tr, ch 1) x 4, then 1 tr
📌 Next ch-space:
1 sc
This gives you:
Ear → sc → Side Petal → sc → Bottom Petal → sc → Other Ear → sc
Join.
Round 5 — Cat Outline (Diamond)
Now you create the lace “face shape,” same structure as your diagram but interpreted as a cat head:
Work around:
- sc on top of ear
- ch 7
- sc on next point
- ch 8 (corner point)
- sc on next point
- ch 7
- sc on next ear
- repeat around
This creates the openwork shape that matches the reference scarf.
Join and fasten off.
JOINING THE CAT MOTIFS — Exactly Like the Photo
You will join motifs on Round 5 while making the ch-7 or ch-8 loops.
Whenever a new motif touches an older one:
✔️ Replace 1 chain with 1 slip stitch into the corresponding loop of the previous motif.
Example:
ch 7 becomes: ch 3, sl st into neighbor motif loop, ch 3
ch 8 becomes: ch 4, sl st into neighbor motif loop, ch 4
You join only at two or three points, as shown in the photo, so the scarf stays soft and lacy.
FULL SCARF ASSEMBLY
Yarn Suggestion:
- Fingering or sport weight
- Gradient yarn looks beautiful
- Hook: 2.5 mm – 3.0 mm
How Many Motifs?
The scarf in the photo is about:
- 5 motifs wide
- 10–12 motifs long
So you will need about 50–60 motifs.
SCARF LAYOUT
Arrange motifs in vertical stripes:

o = chain (ch)
+ = single crochet (sc)
T = double crochet (dc)
X = slip stitch (sl st)
A = increase (2 stitches in the same stitch)

I would like to buy an add-free pattern for this adorable scarf. Do you sell directly or do I need to go to ETSY?
Hello! We were inspired by the image in the chart and tried to adapt a pattern so that you can make the motifs and then join them as you prefer to make your beautiful scarf.
You can also make the cats at the ends and vary with other types of stitches on the body, just joining them afterwards.
