Crochet Chicken

Hello, my friends, welcome to our lovely blog Handmade Learning Here. There’s something truly delightful about small crochet projects that come together quickly while still bringing so much charm and personality. The no-sew crochet chicken is one of those irresistible creations that captures hearts at first glance. With its round, squishy shape and sweet little details, this beginner-friendly amigurumi project is perfect for adding a touch of warmth, playfulness, and creativity to your handmade collection.

If you’re looking for a quick, adorable, and beginner-friendly crochet project, the no-sew crochet chicken might just become your new favorite! At Handmade Learning Here, we love patterns that are simple yet satisfying, and this little chicken checks all the boxes. With its round, plush shape and minimal finishing work, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to create something cute without feeling overwhelmed.

One of the best things about this pattern is that it’s worked entirely in one piece. That means no sewing parts together at the end, something many beginners find challenging. Using basic stitches like single crochet, increases, and decreases, you’ll build the chicken’s body in continuous rounds. As the shape grows, you’ll see it transform from a small circle into a soft, stuffed little creature, which is incredibly rewarding, especially if you’re new to amigurumi.

Another highlight of this project is how customizable it is. You can choose different yarn types to completely change the look; use plush yarn for a fluffy, squishy chicken or cotton yarn for a more defined, classic finish. Small details like the comb, beak, and optional wings allow you to add personality to each piece. You can even experiment with colors to create a whole flock of unique chickens!

This pattern is also a great way to practice important crochet skills. You’ll learn how to work in a magic ring, maintain consistent tension, and shape your project through increases and decreases. Plus, because it’s a relatively small project, it’s perfect for building confidence without committing to something too time-consuming.

Important Notes (Read First!)

  • This pattern is worked in continuous spirals → do NOT join rounds

  • Always mark your first stitch

  • Work tightly to avoid holes

  • Stuff gradually (don’t wait until the end!)

  • The entire chicken is made in one piece (no sewing!)

BODY (Main Chicken Shape)

We start from the bottom and work upward.

Round 1

Make a magic ring (MR) and crochet 6 sc inside it
Pull tight to close the hole

(6 stitches)

Beginner tip: If MR feels hard, do ch 2 and work 6 sc into the first chain.

Round 2

Make 2 sc in each stitch (increase in every stitch)

You will go from 6 → 12 stitches

(12 stitches)

Round 3

(1 sc, inc) repeat all around

➡️ Pattern: one normal stitch, then 2 in next
➡️ Repeat this sequence

(18 stitches)

Round 4

(2 sc, inc) repeat around

(24 stitches)

Round 5

(3 sc, inc) repeat around

(30 stitches)

At this point, your piece should look like a small bowl.

Rounds 6–10

sc in each stitch around

(30 stitches for 5 rounds)

This builds the height of the chicken.

Add Eyes (If Using Safety Eyes)

Place between rounds 7 and 8

Space them about 5–6 stitches apart

Make sure they are centered before securing

Start Stuffing

Add stuffing little by little

Shape it into a round, slightly oval form

Round 11

(3 sc, dec) repeat around

(24 stitches)

Round 12

(2 sc, dec) repeat around

(18 stitches)

Add more stuffing before it gets too tight!

Round 13

(1 sc, dec) repeat around

(12 stitches)

Round 14

dec in every stitch

(6 stitches)

Closing (No-Sew Finish)

Cut yarn, leaving a tail

Use yarn needle to pass through front loops of remaining stitches

Pull tight to close completely

Weave in end

Body finished!

COMB (Top of Head)

Attach red yarn at top center of head.

In the same stitch:

  • (ch 2, 2 dc, sl st)

Move to next stitch and repeat 2–3 times depending on how big you want the comb.

Fasten off and hide ends.

BEAK (Embroidery)

Using orange or yellow yarn:

  1. Insert needle between the eyes
  2. Make 2–3 small horizontal stitches
  3. Slightly pull to form a tiny triangle shape

Keep it small,  less is more!

OPTIONAL WINGS (No Sewing)

Option 1 (embroidered):

  • Make 2–3 curved stitches on each side

Option 2 (crocheted):

  • Attach yarn on side
  • ch 2, 2 dc, sl st in same stitch
  • Fasten off

OPTIONAL DETAILS

Add blush with yarn or makeup

Embroider sleepy eyes instead of safety eyes

Add a tiny tail (same method as comb, but smaller)

Finished Size

~8–12 cm (with worsted yarn)

Larger with plush yarn

Troubleshooting (Super Helpful for Beginners)

Your chicken looks pointy
→ Add more stuffing

You see holes between stitches
→ Use a smaller hook

Shape looks uneven
→ Check stitch count each round

It’s twisting or leaning
→ That’s normal in spiral crochet

You now have a cute, round, crochet chicken!!!
