To work on the warm and cozy squares, you’ll need a US I-9 (5.5mm) crochet hook. If you’re going for the bright and sunny squares, go with a US H-8 (5mm) crochet hook.

Other essential items include a tapestry needle for weaving in loose ends and a pair of scissors for cutting yarn.

Gauge: You can use any yarn weight to create your granny square, and it will affect the square’s size and appearance.

Notes:
Each chain (ch) counts as a stitch.

You can create granny squares of varying sizes by repeating rounds 4 and 5 continuously.

Solstice Granny Square Pattern

Create an adjustable ring for your crochet project, and then follow these instructions for various rounds:

Round 1: Begin by making an adjustable ring. Chain 3 (this counts as a stitch), then work 2 double crochets into the adjustable ring. Chain 3, and work 3 double crochets. Chain 3 again, and work 3 more double crochets into the adjustable ring. Finally, chain 3 and slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3. This will give you a total of 12 double crochets, including the beginning chain-3.

Round 2: Start from the middle stitch of the 3 double crochet block. Chain 5 (this counts as a double crochet and chain-2 space), then work a double crochet in the same stitch. Next, * create a V-stitch in the chain-3 space by working (double crochet, chain 2, double crochet). After this, work another V-stitch in the middle stitch of the next 3 double crochet block. Repeat this pattern from *to around, and then slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3. You’ll have 12 V-stitches in this round.

Round 3: Join your yarn at the corner chain-2 space (the middle chain space of the corner). Chain 3 (this counts as a double crochet), then work 1 double crochet, chain 2, and 2 double crochets into the same space. Now, *work 3 double crochets into the next chain-2 space, repeating this pattern three times. In the corners, work (2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets) in the middle chain space. Continue this pattern repeating from * to around, and then slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3. You’ll have 12 groups of 3 double crochets, which form 4 corner stitches in this round.

Round 4: Join your yarn at the corner chain-2 space, the middle chain space of the corner. Work (chain 5, double crochet, chain 2, V-stitch) in the same space. Now, *create a V-stitch in the space between the 3-double crochet blocks, repeating this until you reach the next corner. In the corners, work (V-stitch, chain 2, V-stitch) in the middle chain space. Repeat this pattern from * to around, and then slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3. You’ll have 24 V-stitches in this round.

Round 5: Join your yarn at the corner chain-2 space (the middle chain space of the corner). Chain 3 (this counts as a double crochet), then work 1 double crochet, chain 2, and 2 double crochets into the same space. Now, *work 3 double crochets into the next chain-2 space, repeating this until you reach the next corner. In the corners, work (2 double crochets, chain 2, 2 double crochets) in the middle chain space. Continue this pattern, repeat from *to around, and then slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain-3. You’ll have 24 groups of 3 double crochets, forming 4 corner stitches in this round.

For larger sizes, simply repeat Rounds 4 and 5 continuously.

Contrary to what it may seem, they are very easy to make and great for beginners in the world of crochet. This is an amazing combination of the traditional granny square and the V-stitch. Making a row of three blocks with double crochets and another round completely done in V-stitches.
