This pattern is inspired by the pattern developed by Jenni Designs, but if you are not looking for this type of heart square, we also have the C2C heart square pattern available. Crochet Heart Blanket, it’s a very beautiful and charming pattern that will allow you to make a warm blanket for the winter. It is also the perfect gift for babies or to be used on Valentine’s Day due to its charming design.

Dimensions:

Square: Approximately 6.75″ x 7″

Finished Blanket (including border): Approximately 35″ x 37″ – Baby Blanket size.

 

To create this pattern, you’ll need to change colors and carry the yarn.

Gauge isn’t crucial for this pattern unless one aims for the exact size provided. In that case, the gauge is 5 single crochet stitches by 4 rows, resulting in 1 inch.

 

MATERIALS:

Crochet Hook: Size H (5 mm)

Scissors

Darning Needle

Yarn: Worsted Weight, 2 colors for each square, 32 yards of each color

For Baby Blanket Border: 225-250 yards

 

ABBREVIATIONS (using US terms):

BLO: Back Loop Only

C1: Color 1

C2: Color 2

Ch: Chain

Dc: Double Crochet

Sc: Single Crochet

Ss: Slip Stitch

St: Stitch

 

CROCHET HEART SQUARE

 (create 25 for a baby blanket):

 

Using Color 1 (C1):

Row 1: Chain 30, single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook and in each remaining chain across. Chain 1, then turn. (29 stitches)

Row 2: Single crochet in each stitch across. Chain 1, then turn. (29 stitches)

Now, we’re going to start changing colors and moving on to the next row. We will be telling you how many single crochets (sc) to do for each color. Just a quick reminder: C1 is Color 1 (the color outside of the heart), and C2 is Color 2 (the heart color).

Row 3: In color 1 (C1), make 14 single crochet stitches (sc), switch to color 2 (C2) and make 1 single crochet stitch, then switch back to C1 and make 14 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches in total)

Row 4: With C1, create 13 sc, switch to C2 and make 3 sc, then switch back to C1 and make 13 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

Row 5: Using C1, crochet 12 sc, switch to C2 and make 5 sc, then switch back to C1 and make 12 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

Row 6: With C1:  Make 11 single crochet (sc), now with the C2: Make 7 single crochet, returno to C1: Make 11 single crochet. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 7: Using color 1 (C1), create 10 single crochet stitches. Switch to color 2 (C2) and make 9 single crochet stitches. Go back to C1 and make 10 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 8: With C1, make 9 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 11 single crochet stitches. Return to C1 and make 9 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 9: With C1, make 8 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 13 single crochet stitches. Go back to C1 and make 8 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 10: Using  C1, make 7 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 15 single crochet stitches. Go back to C1 and make 7 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 11: With the C1, make 6 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 17 single crochet stitches. Return to C1 and make 6 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 12: Begin with C1, make 5 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 19 single crochet stitches. Go back to C1 and make 5 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 13: Start with C1, make 4 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 21 single crochet stitches. Go back to C1 and make 4 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 14: Using C1, make 3 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 23 single crochet stitches. Return to C1 and make 3 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Row 15: Begin with C1, make 2 single crochet stitches. Switch to C2 and create 25 single crochet stitches. Go back to C1 and make 2 more single crochet stitches. Chain 1, then turn. (Total stitches: 29)

Repeat row 15 until you have a total of 22 rows, then proceed to row 23 below.

Row 23: In color 1 (C1), make 3 single crochet (sc), in color 2 (C2), make 11 sc, in C1, make 1 sc, in C2, make 11 sc, and in C1, make 3 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

Row 24: In C1, make 4 sc, in C2, make 9 sc, in C1, make 3 sc, in C2, make 9 sc, and in C1, make 4 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

Row 25: In C1, make 5 sc, in C2, make 7 sc, in C1, make 5 sc, in C2, make 7 sc, and in C1, make 5 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

Row 26: In C1, make 6 sc, in C2, make 5 sc, in C1, make 7 sc, in C2, make 5 sc, and in C1, make 6 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

Row 27: In C1, make 7 sc, in C2, make 3 sc, in C1, make 9 sc, in C2, make 3 sc, and in C1, make 7 sc. Chain 1 and turn. (29 stitches)

After row 27 you can cut the C2 yarn end.

Row 28: Single crochet in each stitch across. Chain 1, then turn.

Row 29: Single crochet in each stitch across.

Once you reach row 29, it’s necessary to create a sc border around the entire square.

Row 30: Chain 1, turn your work. Single crochet in each stitch across. Once you reach the end of the row, chain 2 and pivot to start working along the next edge. Repeat this process three more times, then join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet you made along the edge.

Finish off by fastening off and securely sewing in all loose ends.

 

JOINING CROCHET HEART SQUARE

Once you’ve finished making 25 squares or more, it’s time to put them together in the way you want. To join your squares, place them with their faces touching each other and single crochet (sc) along the edges. You can do this by working through both loops or simply using the outside loops on each square. If you’re unsure how to do this, watching the video tutorial for this pattern is recommended. RUFFLE BORDER

Row 1: Start by joining the yarn anywhere on the border with a slip stitch. Ch1 and single crochet in each stitch across. When you reach a corner, chain 2 and turn to work along the next edge.

Repeat this process three more times, then join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet you made in the border.

This row will have approximately 151-155 stitches per side, totaling around 604-620 stitches.

Row 2: Work in the back loops only (BLO). Ch1 and make 2 double crochets in each stitch around. Also, make 2 double crochets in each chain on the corners using the back loops only.

This row will have approximately 302-310 stitches per side, totaling around 1208-1240 stitches.

Finally, cut the yarn, secure it, and weave in the loose ends.
