Blueberry Pie Quilt Block
Hello, dear reader, and welcome to our lovely blog, Handmade Learning Here! Today, I’m so excited to share a charming pattern with you, created by the talented Wendy Russell from Patchwork Square. The name says it all: Blueberry Pie Quilt Block. Just hearing “Blueberry Pie” makes you feel that warm, cozy comfort of home, doesn’t it? This quilt block is as comforting and delicate as a slice of freshly baked blueberry pie.
This pattern is offered for free and comes in three different sizes: 12” (30.5 cm), 9” (23 cm), and 6” (15 cm). That means you can easily adapt it for a variety of projects, from large quilts to smaller pieces like pillow covers, cushions, or even a cute mini quilt.
The Beauty of the Blueberry Pie Quilt Block
The charm of this block lies in its geometric harmony. It combines whole squares and triangles cut from different fabrics to create a beautifully elegant central design. The result reminds you both of the delicacy of a star and the warm, homey feeling of homemade treats.
You can have fun playing with colors:
-
Blues and purples really give the impression of a blueberry pie.
-
Reds and pinks bring strawberries and raspberries to mind.
-
Greens and yellows add a sunny, country vibe.
It’s one of those blocks that radiates joy, simplicity, and a touch of nostalgia.

Step-by-Step for the Blueberry Pie Quilt Block
Here’s a quick summary of how to assemble your block. Wendy’s PDF gives all the exact measurements for each size (12”, 9”, and 6”), but I’ll explain the process logic.
Materials Needed
5 different fabrics (one for the background and four for the design)
Quilting ruler
Rotary cutter or sharp scissors
Sewing machine (or hand sewing, if you’re patient and careful with your stitches)
Iron
Basic Cuts
You’ll need to cut both whole squares and squares cut on the diagonal, following Wendy’s measurements:
-
Small squares: 2½”, 2”, or 1½”, depending on the chosen size
-
Larger squares cut in half diagonally (triangles)
-
Even larger squares cut into four triangles (crossed diagonals)
Assembly
Start with the triangles – Assemble the squares that combine two fabrics (Half Square Triangles).
Form the central units – Use the largest square for the center and arrange the triangle pairs around it for a balanced composition.
Sew in rows – First, join the units into horizontal rows.
Join the rows – Always use a ¼” seam allowance, aligning the corners carefully.
Press each seam – The iron is your best friend here, helping everything stay in place.
