Strawberry Granny Square
Hello, dear crocheter, welcome to our lovely blog Handmade Learning Here! If you’re looking for a crochet pattern that’s cute, fun, and absolutely perfect for adding personality to your handmade pieces, this Strawberry Granny Square will steal your heart.
This square combines the timeless charm of the classic granny motif with the adorable look of a plump little strawberry resting right in the center. It’s an ideal project for beginners who want to practice shaping, color changes, and working in the round, all while making something irresistibly cute!
In today’s article, I’ll walk you through what makes this pattern so special, why it’s perfect for crocheters of all levels, and how you can use it in your future creations.

A Granny Square With a Fresh Twist
Traditional granny squares are beloved for their simplicity and versatility, but this strawberry version adds a delightful twist. Instead of stitching a separate appliqué onto a square, the strawberry is worked directly into the design, becoming part of the structure itself. That means no extra sewing — just smooth, clean lines and a wonderfully bold centerpiece.
What I love most is how gentle the learning curve is. Even though the strawberry shape has increases and a little shaping, the stitches used are basic: single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet. It’s beginner-friendly but still interesting enough to keep experienced crocheters engaged.

Make the Strawberry (center)
Start with a Magic Circle (MC) using your berry-color yarn (Color A).
Round 1: Ch 2 (this does not count as a stitch). Dc 12 into MC. Join with a Sl St into the first dc. — you should have 12 sts.
Round 2: Ch 1 (not counted). Hdc 1 in first st, then: [Dc 4], [Hdc 1, Sc 1], Sc 1, Sc Inc 1, Hdc 2, Sc Inc 1, Sc 1, [Sc 1, Hdc 1], [Dc 4], Hdc 1. Join with Sl St to first Hdc. — 22 sts total.
Round 3: Ch 1. Sc 2, then Sc Inc 3, then Sc 5, then [Sc 1, Hdc 1], then Ch 1 (this little chain-1 is the “bottom tip” of the strawberry), then [Hdc 1, Sc 1], Sc 5, Sc Inc 3, Sc 2. Join with Sl St to first sc. — you’ll have 31 sts + one chain-1 loop for the bottom.
Fasten off Color A, weave in ends.
Squaring — turn the strawberry into a Granny Square
With the right side (RS) facing, hold the “bottom tip” of your strawberry at the bottom. Join your background/ border yarn (Color C) in the back-loop only (BLO) of that chain-1 space from Round 3.
Round 4 (BLO):
BLO Sc 1 in same stitch where you joined, ch 1, skip 3 sts, then *[BLO Dc 3] in next st, ch 2, [BLO Dc 3] in next st, ch 1, skip 2 sts, BLO Sc Inc 1, ch 1, skip 2 sts, [BLO Sc 2, BLO Hdc 1] in next st, ch 2, [BLO Hdc 3] in next st, ch 1, skip 2 sts, BLO Hdc 2, ch 1, skip 2 sts, [BLO Hdc 3] in next st, ch 2, [BLO Hdc 1, BLO Sc 2] in next st, ch 1, skip 2 sts, BLO Sc Inc 1, ch 1, skip 2 sts, [BLO Dc 3] in next st, ch 2, [BLO Dc 3] in next st, ch 1, skip 3 sts, BLO Sc 1 in the initial chain-1 space, join with Sl St to first sc.
Round 5:
Sl St into the next ch-1 space, ch 2 (counts as dc post), then [Dc 2] in same ch-1 space, ch 1. Then: *[Dc 3, ch 2, Dc 3] in next ch-2 space, ch 1, then [Dc 3] in next ch-1 space, ch 1 — repeat from * three more times. Finish with [Dc 3, ch 2, Dc 3] in last ch-2 space, ch 1, Dc 3 in next ch-1 space, ch 1. Join with Sl St to first dc (not into initial ch-2). Fasten off and weave in ends.
At this point you have a nice square border around your strawberry — a proper granny-style square!
Add the Leaves (top of strawberry)
With RS facing and holding the square so the strawberry bottom is down, join Color B (leaf/green) at one of the stitches next to the top corner (choose right or left depending whether you are right- or left-handed).
Row 1: Ch 1 (counts as a Sl St), FLO Sl St 2, Ch 4, Sl St into 2nd ch from hook, Sl St 2, FLO Sl St 1 into the next stitch on Round 3, FLO Sl St 2. That makes a little stem + part of the leaf cluster.
Row 2: Ch 4, then — tilt your square so you can reach the lower loops of the Sl St from Row 1. Work Sl St into the lower loop of the first Sl St, then *(Ch 4, Sl St into the lower loop of next Sl St) — repeat 5 times. Then fasten off and weave in ends.
These loops make the little leaves at the top of the strawberry.
Finishing Touch
Use yarn in Color C (background/border color) to embroider tiny “seeds” on the strawberry — just a few small stitches here and there to give it a strawberry-look. Fasten off and weave all ends securely.
And … voilà! Your Strawberry Granny Square is done

Tips & What I Love About This Pattern
The strawberry is worked directly inside the granny square, no sewing appliqués on afterwards. That makes your projects cleaner and easier.
Because it uses a standard granny-square “squaring” at the end, you can easily mix this square with other granny squares (plain ones or other fruit squares) to make blankets, pillow covers, bags, or any patchwork-style project.
The pattern uses basic stitches (sc, hdc, dc) plus some simple techniques (magic circle, BLO, increases), great for beginners who already know basic crochet.
If you like, you can change colors, maybe make a bunch of strawberry squares in different shades, or use fun colors for a “fantasy fruit” blanket.
Whether you’re just beginning your crochet journey or you’ve been stitching for years, the Strawberry Granny Square is one of those patterns that makes your heart smile. It teaches helpful skills, works up quickly, and looks darling no matter what colors you choose.
If you’re looking for a charming motif to add to your library — something sweet, cheerful, and a little nostalgic — this pattern is a perfect choice.
