BABY JACKET WITH HOOD INSTRUCTIONS
1st Row (Wrong Side – Foundation row): Begin by working a double crochet (dc) into the 4th chain from the hook, which counts as the 2nd double crochet. Follow this with 1 dc in each of the next 6 chains (Front – Floor). In the subsequent chain, create (1 dc, chain 2, 1 dc). Continue by making 1 dc in each of the next 8 chains (Sleeve). Once more, make (1 dc, chain 2, 1 dc) in the next chain. Proceed with 1 dc in each of the next 14 chains (Back). Repeat the (1 dc, chain 2, 1 dc) sequence in the following chain. Then, work 1 dc in each of the next 8 chains (Sleeve). For the final stretch, make (1 dc, chain 2, 1 dc) in the next chain, and complete the row by working 1 dc in each of the last 8 chains (Front). Turn your work. This row consists of 54 dc stitches and 4 chain-2 spaces.
2nd Row (Increasing row): Start with a chain 3, which will be considered as a dc throughout the pattern. *[Work 1 dc in each dc stitch until you reach the next chain-2 space. In the next chain-2 space, work (1 dc, chain 2, 1 dc)]. Repeat this sequence four times. Then, work 1 dc in each dc stitch until you reach the end of the row. Turn. This row consists of 62 dc stitches and 4 chain-2 spaces. Repeat the 2nd-row pattern 7 (9-11) more times. This will result in a total of 118 (134-150) dc stitches and 4 chain-2 spaces.
Note: At this stage, each Front section will have 17 (19-21) stitches, each sleeve will have 26 (30-34) stitches, and the Back section will have 32 (36-40) stitches.
BODY
1st Row (Right Side – Dividing row): Begin by chaining 3. Then, work 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch until you reach the next chain-2 space. Continue by making 1 double crochet in the next chain-2 space. Chain 4 to create the underarm gap. Skip all stitches in the next Sleeve section. Proceed to make 1 double crochet in the following chain-2 space. Repeat this sequence once more. Finally, complete the row by making 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch until you reach the end of the row. Turn. This row will have a total of 70 (78-86) double crochet stitches and 2 chain-4 spaces.
2nd Row: Chain 3. Work 1 double crochet in each stitch and chain across the row. Turn. This row will have 78 (86-94) double crochet stitches in total.
3rd Row: Chain 3. Continue by making 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch across the row. Turn. Repeat this pattern for each row until the Body measures 6 (8-10) inches [15 (20.5-25.5) cm] from the underarm. Finally, fasten off.
SLEEVES
Note: To maintain a consistent texture with the Body, turn your work at the end of each round of the Sleeve.
1st Round (Right Side): Begin by joining the yarn with a slip stitch in the 3rd Chain of the underarm chain. Chain 3 (counting as a double crochet). Next, make 2 double crochets in the following chain. Proceed to create 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch of the Sleeve. Continue with 2 double crochets in the next chain from the underarm chain. Finally, complete the round with 1 double crochet in the last chain. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3. Turn your work. This round consists of 32 (36-40) double crochet stitches.
2nd Round (Wrong Side – Decreasing round): Chain 3 and start with a double crochet 2 together (dc2tog). Then, make 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch until only 2 stitches remain. Finish the round with another dc2tog. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. Turn your work. This round consists of 30 (34-38) double crochet stitches.
3rd Round: Chain 3 and proceed to make 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3. Turn your work.
Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rounds for 4 (6-7) more times. This will result in 22 (22-24) double crochet stitches. Continue repeating the 3rd round until the Sleeve measures 6 (8-9) inches [15 (20.5-23) cm] from the underarm. Finally, fasten off.
HOOD
1st Row (Right Side): Begin by working into the back loops of the foundation chain, skipping the first chain. Initiate the yarn by joining with a slip stitch in the next chain. Chain 3. Proceed to create 1 double crochet in each of the following 17 chains. Then, repeat the pattern of (2 double crochets in the next chain) 14 times. Finally, complete 1 double crochet in each of the last 18 chains. Turn your work, leaving the last chain unworked. This row comprises a total of 64 double crochet stitches.
2nd Row: Chain 3, and continue by making 1 double crochet in each double crochet stitch across the row. Turn your work.
Continue repeating the previous row until the Hood reaches a length of 8 inches [20.5 cm] from the neck edge. There’s no need to fasten off.
Joining the top of the Hood: Fold the final row of the Hood in half, and while working through both layers, use slip stitches to connect each stitch across to join the top of the Hood.
EARS
Make 2.
Chain 5. In the 1st Row, craft 6 treble (tr) crochet stitches in the 5th chain from the hook, keeping in mind that the skipped Ch 4 counts as a tr. Turn your work. This row will comprise 7 tr stitches.
Moving on to the 2nd Row, start with a Ch 4 (which counts as a tr). Create 1 tr in the first stitch to make an increase. Repeat the pattern of making 2 tr in the next stitch six more times. This row will result in 14 tr stitches. Afterward, fasten off, ensuring you leave a long tail. Utilize this tail to sew each Ear onto the Hood, curving the Ear to achieve a crescent shape as depicted in the photo.
For finishing touches, sew 4 (5-6) buttons evenly spaced along the Left Front. On the Right Front, use the spaces between the double crochet (dc) stitches to create buttonholes, ensuring they coordinate with the buttons.
