Finished dimensions:

  • 6-12 Months: 14 inches in circumference, with a height of 6.75 inches including the ruffle brim.
  • 1-3 Toddler: 16 inches in circumference, with a height of 7.5 inches including the ruffle brim.
  • 3-10 Child: 19 inches in circumference, with a height of 8.5 inches including the ruffle brim.

Supplies:

4-Medium / Worsted / 100% Acrylic / Approximately 155 yards for each size

  • Ice Yarn Abordale: 2 skeins for each size
  • Crochet hook: US I/9, 5.5mm
  • Tapestry needle for finishing
  • Scissors

 

Gauge:

13 half double crochet stitches by 8.5 rows = 4 inches using a US I-9, 5.5mm crochet hook.

Round 5: Chain 1, make 2 half double crochet stitches in the first stitch, then alternate between making 1 half double crochet stitch in each of the next 3 stitches and making 2 half double crochet stitches in the next stitch all around. Join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (You should have 45 stitches.)

 

Body of the hat

Round 6: Start by counting the third chain as a stitch, then make 2 double crochets in the first stitch. Next, skip the next 2 stitches, and make a 3-double crochet cluster in the following stitch. Repeat this sequence all around, and join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (You should have 15 3-double crochet clusters in total.)

Round 7: Crochet slip stitches until you reach the next space between clusters. Then, chain 3 and make 2 double crochets in the same space. Continue by making a 3-double crochet cluster in the next space between clusters, and repeat this pattern all around. Finally, join with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (You’ll still have 15 3-double crochet clusters.)

Rounds 8 and 9: Simply repeat Round 7.

 

Ruffle Brim

Round 10: Crochet slip stitch (sl st) until you reach the space between clusters. Then make a single crochet (sc) in the same space. *Chain 3, skip the next cluster, and make a single crochet in the next space between clusters; repeat this pattern all around. Finish by joining with a slip stitch in the first stitch. (You’ll have 15 chain-3 spaces in total.)

Round 11: Start by making a slip stitch in the first chain-3 space. Then chain 3 (this counts as your first stitch), and work 4 double crochets (dc) in the same chain-3 space. *Continue making 5 double crochets in each subsequent chain-3 space around the circle. Finally, join with a slip stitch in the top of the initial chain-3. (This round will have 75 stitches.)

Round 12: Begin by chaining 3 (counts as a stitch), then double crochet (dc) in the next stitch. Follow this with 3 double crochets in the next stitch, then 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. *Chain 1, double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then work 3 double crochets in the following stitch, and 1 double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches; repeat this sequence around. After that, [chain 2, make 3 double crochets into the same chain-3 space, chain 2, slip stitch to the same space, chain 1, slip stitch to the next chain-3 space] 7 times. Next, [chain 1, make 2 half double crochets into the same chain-3 space, chain 1, slip stitch to the same space, chain 1, slip stitch to the next chain-3 space] 6 times. Then, chain 1, make 2 half double crochets into the same space, chain 1, slip stitch to the same space, and finally, fasten off. Cut the yarn, leaving a 20-inch long yarn tail.

Using a tapestry needle, sew the flower while curling. Start from the finished side with the yarn tail. Add a few more stitches back and forth to secure. Then attach the flower to the hat. Cut the yarn and weave in the end.
