Special Stitches

Back Loop: In regular crochet, stitches form a distinct pattern on the side. Instead of putting the crochet hook through the whole pattern, focus on inserting it only under the back loop (the loop farthest from you).

Front Loop: For this stitch, insert the crochet hook solely under the front loop of the pattern (the loop closest to you). This technique gives a unique texture to your crochet work.

In the pattern, when you see brackets like [2 single crochet in the next stitch, single crochet in the next stitch] 6 times, it means you’ll repeat the instructions within the brackets a total of 6 times. So, follow these steps: perform 2 single crochets in the next stitch, then do 1 single crochet in the stitch after that. Repeat this sequence a total of 6 times.

To clarify, the overall instruction is to do 2 single crochets in the next stitch and 1 single crochet in the following stitch, and you’ll repeat this set of actions six times in total.

Size: About 3.5 inches tall x 4 inches wide

Make a chain of 2.

Round 1:

Work 6 single crochet (sc) stitches in the second chain from the hook.

Place a marker for the beginning of the round, and move the marker up as you complete each round.

Round 2:

Work 2 sc in each stitch around – you’ll have 12 stitches.

Round 3:

Repeat [2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in the next stitch] six times – now you’ll have 18 stitches.

Rounds 4 to 8:

Gradually increase the stitches in each round, following the pattern provided. You’ll end up with 48 stitches in Round 8.

Round 9:

[2 sc in the next stitch, 1 sc in the next 7 stitches] repeated six times – now you have 54 stitches.

Round 10:

Single crochet in the back loop of each stitch – still 54 stitches.

Rounds 11 to 18:

Half-double crochet in each stitch around – maintain 54 stitches.

Round 19:

Single crochet in the next 15 stitches, chain 12, skip 12 stitches, single crochet in the next 15 stitches, chain 12, skip 11 stitches, single crochet in the next stitch – total 54 stitches.

Finishing Row:

End working in the round.

Row 1: Chain 1, turn, single crochet in the front loop of the single crochet.

Place 12 single crochet stitches around the chains (add more if needed for a uniform look).

Single crochet in the front loop of the next 15 single crochets, 12 single crochet stitches around the chains.

Single crochet in the front loop of the next 15 single crochets, slip stitch into the starting single crochet.

Tie off, sew in ends.

This simplified version breaks down the steps into basic crochet terms and instructions.

Hello, I am rather new to baskets, had trouble following your instructions on your main site, (4-8) because it was not written out, went to the video which did clarify a few items in detail, but Pamela is not following the same pattern that you provided this is a different pattern. Your pdf did explain a bit better and I could complete. Thank you.

  • This was a great project. Thank you for showing us. My question is, how to keep the 3 yarns from tangling up?
