Originally made with rope soles, they have won the hearts of many for their simplicity and comfort. Now, with crochet, this trend becomes an even more exclusive and personalized piece. In this article, we’ll explore how a crochet pattern for espadrilles can bring a unique handmade touch to your wardrobe, highlighting its features and what you need to create your own version.

Why Choose Crocheted Espadrilles?

Crocheted espadrilles are the perfect blend of comfort and style. They allow for complete customization, from choosing colors and yarns to the design details. Additionally, since they are made with lightweight materials like cotton or linen, they are ideal for warm weather, providing breathability and preventing excessive sweating.

Depending on the pattern, some finishing touches may include picot edges or fringes for a decorative flair.

Tips for Personalizing Your Crocheted Espadrilles

Personalizing your crocheted espadrilles is part of the fun of the process. Consider adding details like bows, pompoms, or even embroidery for a personal touch. Mixing different colors or using yarns with varying textures can also create an interesting and unique visual effect. If you’re looking for something more sophisticated, think about incorporating metallic threads or yarns with a bit of sparkle.

Furthermore, the choice of the type of sole can make a big difference. You might opt for thinner soles for a light and delicate look or more robust and sturdy soles for greater durability and outdoor use.

Materials:

100 g Schachenmayr Catania yarn in leaf green (#00389)

US D-3 (3 mm) Milward crochet hook

Yarn needle

1 pair of PRYM espadrille soles, size 8-9 (Art. 975103)

Fancy Pattern:

Follow Chart 1 and complete rows 1 – 12 once. After finishing these rows, work rows 13 and 14 along the straight edge of the foundation chain.

Eyelet Pattern:

Follow Chart 2. Repeat rows 1 and 2, finishing with a row 2.

Note: Crochet tightly to ensure a firm fabric. The side pieces should fit snugly on the sole and should not extend beyond the length of the sole.

GAUGE: 28 stitches and 14.5 rows = 4 x 4 inches / (10 x 10 cm).

INSTRUCTIONS

Flap: Chain 15 stitches and follow Chart 1. After finishing the 12th row, cut the yarn and secure it. For rows 13 and 14, work along the edge of the chain (the gray part on the chart).

Tip: To make sure the flap fits well, you can adjust its width on the 12th row. Use slip stitches to make it narrower or single crochet to make it wider.

Heel and Side Piece: Start like you did for the flap, following rows 1 to 4 of the gray part of Chart 2. For the left side, work over the first 14 stitches, following the 1st row of Chart 2 (above the gray part) to make 6 small squares. Keep repeating rows 1 and 2 until you’ve worked 18 rows in total. If you need a smaller size, do fewer rows; for a larger size, do more rows. Make the other side piece the same way. Then, along the top edges of both sides and the heel, do 1 row of single crochet and 1 row of picot. For the picot row: * Do 2 single crochet stitches, then 1 picot (chain 3, and make 1 slip stitch in the 1st chain); repeat from *.

Finishing: Attach the narrow edge of the side piece to the straight edge of the flap, making sure the picot edge is at the front. Then sew the crochet piece to the edge of the sole using buttonhole stitches (see the diagram). You can adjust the size here by sewing it right at the edge or placing it just above the sole.
